In the post today we received a letter entitled "Monthly Inquiries into the Distribution and Services Sector", sent by the Office for National Statistics. It included a form asking us for our total turnover for the period 1 January 2008 to 31 January 2008. But get this. It stated "Please return your data by 7 February 2008. Failure to make a return can incur penalties." So we have to stop what we are doing and work out our income for the month right now, not at our own convenience, or we'll get locked up or something. Do bureaucrats have any idea what it's like to actually have to earn a living, instead of just turning up for work and spending taxpayer's money? Read more...

Please don't take this the wrong way. I'm not a Microsoft hater or a Bill Gates basher. I wouldn't be where I am today without Windows. Our business would not be a success if we did not promote Windows software. And I made a living for many years writing about Windows, reviewing Windows software and helping magazine readers with their Windows computer problems in the PC Advisor magazine Helproom column. But I'm finally making the switch to Linux. Read more...

Choice is good. Too much choice, though, can be a bit of a mixed blessing. When my wife Olga is in a restaurant, it takes her several minutes to decide what to order. It's as if her life depends on making the right decision. I don't make such a meal out of choosing what to eat (pardon the pun) but deciding what blog package to use is a bit more critical because once you have started to use it you're more or less stuck with it. And there are more blogging scripts to pick from than choices on even the most elaborate restaurant menu. Read more...
